Lumen Lens

Lumen Lens is a digital photo booth that allows Seahawks fans to snap a picture with up to two of their favorite players. When I joined the Seahawks in 2023, I took over project management for Lumen Lens, overseeing both its technical and experiential aspects.

My Role

My role in managing Lumen Lens includes:

The Lumen Lens Process

Three photos of Meghan Skapyak taken using Lumen Lens.

Some photos I've taken with Lumen Lens kiosks throughout the years!

The process for fans is simple and engaging:

  1. Approach the kiosk and select a photo frame.
  2. Choose up to two players to pose with.
  3. Follow the on-screen countdown and pose in the designated spot.
  4. Review the photo and send it to their phone or email.

A key highlight of Lumen Lens is its interactive player overlays. Before the final shot, players pop into the frame and sometimes even engage with fans before striking their final pose, adding an extra layer of fun to the experience.

Creating Dynamic Photo Frames

My first major project with Lumen Lens was designing themed photo frames for each home game and key events throughout the year. I collaborated with our Graphic Design team to create:

  • Game-specific frames that reflected the theme of each matchup.
  • Evergreen Seahawks frames for general use.
  • Special event frames for tentpole moments like playoffs or training camp.

To ensure consistency, I:

These custom frames turned each Lumen Lens photo into a unique keepsake, encouraging fans to return and collect new frames at different events.

Researching & Improving the Experience

To continually enhance the experience, I use three key research methods:

  • Comparative Analysis
    • Spoke with other NFL product teams to exchange insights on similar photo booth tech.
    • Analyzed photo kiosks in malls, museums, and stadiums to gather UX inspiration.
  • Field Studies on Game Days
    • Observed fans using Lumen Lens firsthand to identify pain points.
    • Checked in with volunteers after shifts to gather feedback.
  • Post-Game Data Analysis
    • Reviewed vendor reports on most-selected players, frames, and kiosk usage.

This research has led to several notable improvements, including:

  • Reordering player selections to prioritize fan favorites.
  • Adjusting player poses to prevent arms from blocking faces.
  • Adding crowd control barriers around popular kiosks for a smoother experience.

Managing Lumen Lens Volunteers

On game days, I manage volunteers stationed at Lumen Lens kiosks, ensuring they:

  • Understand the experience and can assist fans.
  • Handle crowd flow efficiently.
  • Report technical or UX issues that arise during their shifts.

I provide training, itineraries, and post-game debriefs to continuously improve their experience. Many volunteers return multiple times per season, which speaks to the fun and rewarding nature of working with Lumen Lens.

Continuous Improvement

Lumen Lens improvements happen both in-house and through vendor collaboration. While I can make some UX updates directly through our content management system, larger changes require coordination with our vendor. Key projects I’ve worked on include:

Whenever new opportunities arise to improve or expand Lumen Lens, I take ownership of seeing them through.

Why This Project Matters

Lumen Lens is one of the most rewarding projects I manage because of the joy it brings to fans. Whether it’s:

  • A mother and her child excitedly sharing a photo with DK Metcalf, or
  • A volunteer returning for the third time, eager to see creative fan poses

I see firsthand how these keepsakes enhance the fan experience. They capture memorable moments with friends, family, and favorite players—creating something truly unique to Seahawks games.
